Living a pandemic has been a challenging experience for many people since it has taken us out of the daily life to which we were accustomed. Routines, ways of working, ways of relating, getting together, living together as a family have changed and, especially for university students, the way of studying with a new way of learning and receiving classes.

COVID-19 and all the restrictions that it brought with it have made us rethink and redesign everything that we planned and hoped to achieve in 2020. When this year began, we heard comments regarding how promising it would be and the combination of numbers to bring many changes to humanity. We started this cycle with great enthusiasm and hope. It marked the beginning of an important cycle, such as their entry to university; for others, it was the closure or the achievement of an achievement: completing university education, graduating, and starting professional practice. However, with confinement and social distancing, all these activities had to be suspended or adjusted, generating feelings of sadness, hopelessness, negativity, lack of motivation, and anguish.

For young people, the pandemic has brought not only physical but emotional and social consequences, since in the face of the loss of social contact, the opportunities to enjoy people of the same age have been considerably reduced, something vital at this stage of development. Faced with confinement, many of them may be experiencing feelings of loneliness and uncertainty very similar to those experienced in a duel since the loss of social environments, physical training spaces, and psycho-affective bonding with people of the same age can affect their emotional state.  

Here are some tips to help you cope with feelings of loss and develop psycho-emotional skills in confinement.

  1. Relieve emotional tension by talking and expressing how you feel about the uncertainty of how this year will end, how the internship will be done, or whether it will be possible to participate in a graduation ceremony. Expressing it with people who are living the same helps reduce sadness, anxiety, and anguish. Feeling that others are in the same circumstances helps you deal with the situation in a better way.
  2. Observing emotions, feeling them, naming, and expressing them help assertive emotional management in crises such as the one experienced by humanity. It is normal to experience sadness, anguish, and anxiety, but these will only be experienced for short periods. For a few days; If they persist and increase, it is necessary to consult a professional and seek psychological support.
  3. Forming and strengthening friendship ties between classmates and career, to promote cooperative learning, and to be a point of support in the face of doubts that may arise.
  4. Disconnect the mind from the negative feelings generated in the face of what cannot be controlled: choose to focus attention on personal growth activities such as meditating, reading, recreation through artistic and recreational activities (playing an instrument, singing, writing, or paint), etc.
  5. Ensuring physical health: respecting meal times, eating healthy, and having a daily exercise routine optimizes and favors brain function and improves mood.
  6. Build resilience, which is the ability to cope with crises and overcome them. This is achieved by adapting to change and being flexible in responding to unforeseen events. See this time as an opportunity for growth in ​​self-learning, the development of creative solutions, adaptation to change, and the use and use of technology to learn, work, and interact assertively.
  7. Build virtual communication and support networks, keeping in touch with loved ones, colleagues, and friends. Make frequent video calls and organize virtual social gatherings. 
  8. Avoid the feeling of NOTHING, as this time can be used to take care of what is happening each day, without worrying about the future. Adopt the philosophy of small steps, fulfilling what is required on each day

Finally, always remember the temporality of this situation: this will pass, and with it will be learning, new skills, memories of life, and new goals.
